Comp Sci at BU

I’ve been accepted to BU but am wondering about the strength of their computer science department. In visiting, I found out that it is actually dispersed across 3 colleges, with the CAS part of the department being the strongest. However I do not know how it ranks comparably to other schools such as Lehigh, U of Rochester and U or Maryland College Park – I’m looking to have a focus in graphics.

Any advice would be great. Thanks!!

i hate doing this, because i hate college rankings.. but here is The Chronicle of Higher Education's computer science rankings. they rank a college's department based on its faculty, measuring everything from the number of journal publications to the number of awards won.

for computer science, BU ranks 7th, beating all the other colleges u mentioned and even cal tech.

You should call the department and ask them specifically about your interests. But first you should read the requirements for a compsci degree, particularly any core requirements either in liberal arts or in that field. Check the CAS bulletin to start.

I actually just visited... and they told me about The Chronicle of Higher Education ranking... and well I just don't know HOW reliable those rankings are... As far as talking to the department... I did just that over the weekend. In talking to them i got mixed feelings. The whole department seemed rather spread out and wishy-washy... The core requirements for CAS are stringent, and unfortunately that is a deterrent that is making me scrutinize the CS department.

Thanks for all the help!

Rankings are generally crap. You have to answer your own feelings about the department, the core CAS reqs, etc. and about whether you want to be at BU in Boston or elsewhere. This is not a basic algorithm with defined variables that generates a statistically valid result. This is gut feeling and reading your own heart and mind.

Thanks. :)
