Hi, I am having trouble choosing which college to apply to. Is it more beneficial to have a BS degree rather than a BA degree for comp sci? I really want to learn a foreign languages, but I want to learn physics and chemistry. I was also wondering, is it easier to get into CAS or COE? Sorry about the random strings of sentences. Thank you.

As far as I know, COE is a lot harder to get into than CAS. It’s similar to UC Berkeley in that the College of Engineering has a lot higher standards than the College of Arts and Sciences.

Are you also allowed to take languages in COE?

You can always take courses from other colleges even if you’re not in that one. So yes, you can take languages in COE. In fact, you’re required to take six electives (minus AP courses you might have taken). BS versus BA does not matter. The big difference is whether you want the science requirements (plus one extra math class, technical writing requirement, and intro to engineering requirement) in COE, versus the three semester language requirement in A&S. If you’re not very interested in hardware, physics probably won’t be very useful to you (chemistry in any case). If you just want to learn about chemistry and physics to be a more well-rounded person, then consider applying to A&S and taking one of the classes for non-majors/engineers.

If you think you made the wrong decision in the end, you can apply to transfer colleges. I went from COE to A&S (CS major here) and it wasn’t very difficult.

Both CAS and COE are highly selective. CAS has a lower admit rate, while COE has higher math standardized test scores.

This depends on your (subjective) definition of harder. Both colleges are highly competitive to get into.

I know quite a few AEP + CS/ChemE + CS double majors, if that is something you are looking to consider. If you simply want to have the knowledge or just explore the subject in greater detail, A&S seems like a great way of doing so.

Thank you all again. I think so far I’m going to make CAS my primary choice.
