Hi guys! As May 1 is fast approaching, I really need help weighing my decisions. My top choices are between NYU and Wesleyan University. I feel like the big game changer would be the culture and environment of the two schools. Please post anything about the kind of community each school has, thanks!
(And if anyone’s asking: to be honest, I don’t know what kind of community I’d belong in. I guess that I’d like to be surrounded by a diverse group of people since I am an international student myself.)
Wesleyan is basically three or four NYU dormitories (out of a total of 22) spread over 360 acres of New England landscape. If that appeals to you, choose Wesleyan. If you’d prefer the reverse, which would be ten Wesleyans spread throughout the East and West Village of Manhattan, then choose NYU.
You will have smaller classes, more class discussions, and get to know your classmates and professors more intimately both in and out of the classroom at Wesleyan.
Which environment do you prefer- large lectures by famous professors, independence, no real campus distinct from the city, access to one of the world’s greatest cities, off campus socialization, and internship opportunities throughout the year… or a lovely campus with small discussion based classes, almost all the resources and research opportunities going to undergrads not grads, entertainment largely on-campus as opposed to off, and a warm campus community? In addition, both schools have predominantly liberal students and an open-to-all-things type of culture, but because there is more of a community feel at Wesleyan, the experimental and questioning culture will be more prevalent.
To love NYU is to want to live in NYC.
Both schools are diverse. NYU will have larger numbers of students of various backgrounds if that is very important to you, but Wes has done a great job of attracting diverse students, too.
Both are great choices. Pick the environment you prefer.
