I dont go to an Ivy League, I go to a decent middle grade state school. I am majoring in accounting and I am a freshman. Other than doing the obvious of trying to get good grades what else you recommend me do to be more competitive with people who go to Ivy Leagues.

I wouldn't think the Ivy Leagues would be of much concern to you if you are going into accounting. Do the big 4 firms recruit at your school? If so, you just need to stand out in your class and relative to students from other large schools in your region.

The only schools in the Ivies you'd be competing with for accounting jobs are Penn and Cornell. But then again, there are a ton of other schools that have good business programs.

true, actually that a good point I will definitely try to figure which big 4s recruit at my school. Should I take a internship as a teller at a bank? As I am a Freshman and so far nobody wants me they tell me to apply latter on junior or senior.

It would be good job experience, but I can't really advise you myself. I think job experience is good, but it does depend. Of course having one is better than no job.

People way overrated the importance/significance of ivy leagues. I know plenty of people who graduated from San Jose State University or Golden Gate University (considered as "no name schools" by those ivy elitists) and worked for big 4 accounting firms. Plenty of them got their CPA and even CFA licenses and are now making big bucks.

well, considering only two schools in the ivies have business programs and therefore accounting programs...

Thanks seaweed and sachmoney. I needed that confidence boost!!! I was beginning to have nightmares of being surrounded by ivy grads getting jobs over me and being embarrassed. Thanks

most ivy grads try to shoot for ib.

ib being international bussines? right

ibanking;
well, not most ivy grads...just a significant proportion
