has anyone read the college ******* book on stanford? there were a few comments there that "competition is stiff" and such...

the whole competitive v. laid back atmosphere is really important to me in choosing a college because good god i've had enough hardcore competition in my high school-- so can anybody comment on competition at stanford?

hmm i dnt know why it starred out that word.. p-r-o-w-l-e-r

From what I have heard and witnessed, Stanford is not nearly as cut throat competitive as the ivies (whose students are often referred to as "sharks") I wouldn't be worried about that at Stanford AT ALL.

From what I've experienced, Princeton isn't cutthorat at all (compared to schools like UC Berkeley). I hear Harvard's atmosphere may be a bit tense, and I have no idea about any of the other Ivies.

I also hear that Stanford is very laid back.

It depends what you mean by competition. In my experience, students have been very helpful, study together, help each other out, etc. I've had a couple of friends who have really helped me get through a couple of tough classes both knowing that I would never be able to help them in their classes. If by "the competition" they mean the quality of students, then that might be true. Students here are really really smart. So even though they aren't being competitive, grading is inherently based on comparing you to your classmates so in that sense it is competitive.

does alot of classes get graded on the cruve?
