Competitive admission for Biomed PhD schools

Hi, I have a question to ask, considered an applicant has 1st class hons from a UK universities, 1 co-authored publication, 2.5years of full-time (8.30am-6pm) research experience in 3 labs, decent GRE scores, 3 letter of reference from 3 diff research professor, how much chance does this student stand in getting into a well-known Biomedical PhD program in probably (UC, Harvard, Johns Hopkins & others as well)?

May I also know what factors would be present in a strong applicant then?

Thank you for all your help.

You have a pretty good shot at the schools you mentioned. I would encourage you to include others that don’t get thousands of applications per year though. Admission committees appreciate candidates with substantial research experience and clear idea of what they are interested in. Find the department you want to join based on the labs that are there. If you find a good fit, that is something to talk about in your application materials.

u sound like a good candidate. i agree with the first post that you should add more universities to your list. international applications are given consideration after domestic applicants and to some programs they may only accept 1-2 students per year depending on the funding they get.

wow thanks for the encouragement ppl. it sure sounds good hearing that but i have seen many ppl on this forums with insane stats e.g. GPA 4.0, 1st-authored publications, and still occasionally gets rejected from top biomed graduate school. I will add more school prob to act as a safety backup. thanks ppl!

i heard there are no gpas in the UK? is that true?
the adcoms consider each application as a whole.
some people also say that high GPA and high GRE does not guarantee to get you in but just gets your application to be looked at. in my case i had a high GPA and my GREs are not really that great but i was offered interviews at every single school i applied to.
in my opinion letters of recs is by far the most important part of the application
then the personal statement comes after.
what type of program are u looking into?

Hi hamster09,

would u mind telling ur stats? Im looking at biomed programs and I thought since everyone applying to a PhD program should have great GPA and GRE, the only things that distinguishes the best from the not-so-good would be their

(1) Research Experience
(2) Letter of References
(3) Publications

I believe these are the crucial deciding factors to admission considerations.
