Competitive High School?

Does having a "competitive" high school really help you? I go to a big public school in Florida (3000+ kids) that doesn't send many off to ivies; I'd be one of the few. To paint a picture, I took the SAT II's at my own school with five other kids, all of which went to a private school nearby.

What does competitive mean, and can it really help you get accepted? It sounds to me that if your school has tons of kids that are ivy-oriented, it would hurt you, but that might just be a delusion of mine.

There's an interesting thread on the parents forum about how kids from NYC fare in college admissions. It contains a lot of talk about elite private schools in NYC, but also discussion of competitive public high schools and regular public high schools and how all these environments affect your chances.

That's neat, thank you.
