truazn8948532, did they teach you at your school that MIT is not an Ivy?

^ Jealous much nervousmommy?

As an admissions professional, I can say that the strength of a high school is a factor in the admission decision. However, that needs to be put into perspective. More students from great high schools go on to the most competitive colleges overall. However, some families and students seem to think that attending a great high school should somehow guarantee admission to one of these schools. Yes, there is more competitive for the best colleges at this kind of high school. However, there are many high schools that will rarely send students to the best colleges, so attending a great high school at least places a student under more serious scrutiny and opens up this kind of opportunity.

Students at great high schools have opportunities that students at other schools may not have ... great student colleagues, quality academics, many opportunities for significant extracurricular activities, and an increased chance at gaining admission to a top college. Because they may not get into the very best college of their own personal choice does not diminish the benefits of the high school education they received ... or the exceptional quality of the colleges to which they will have increased access.

I'm well aware MIT is not an Ivy...

but yea, no need to be bitter that my free public magnet HS does so well.

Just curious, what is RM's track record with sending kids to top colleges? I know blair does amazingly well.

what if our school is pretty bad but it seems to have a decent reputation?
for example, getting an 800 in math and chem sat is like impossible, but adcoms might think our school is good so disregard that achievement
but our school actually sucks at math and chem
how will that affect?

Is that even a question ;) Of course we do great! We place people at almost every LAC you can think of! If you'd like I can PM you with a list of schools some of our students accepted to. But just like Blair, the non-Magnet crowd here at RM isn't too bright...
