compliance/legal department in a major bank

Hi,

Does anyone know what kind of work a job in the compliance/legal department in a major bank like Goldman would entail? Everyone I've talked to doesn't seem to know all that much about it. Does it in anyway bear resemblance to that of a lawyer at a big law firm? Thanks!

Well, it would bear some resemblance to the work of lawyers in big law firms who work advising banks. And from what I know of the culture at Goldman, the hours there have a fair amount in common with big law firms, too.

Thanks Hanna. Since an entry-level job in the compliance/legal department doesn't require a law degree, I would imagine it's a much less challenging job considering the skills (or lack thereof) required? Do you happen to know what kind of work it entails exactly?

I work in the legal department fo a major bank. I can tell you that as a lawyer, the bank legal department does it all. Yes we retain outside counsel for larger more complex matters, but on the compliance/regulatory side we do it all. We tend to hire more experienced lawyers- 5+ years out of law school, who can hit the ground running.

We also maintain separate "compliance" departments within our line groups that handle routine "regulatory" and "audit" type isues. Those departments are generally staffed by non lawyers. They too tend to hire expereinced "auditors" who are familiar with the regulations applicab le to Banks. That's not to say you couldn't find an entry level job, but it could be diffciult.air
