I am an aspiring composition major/senior in high school, and the schools that I am applying to include MSM, NEC, Oberlin, Eastman, and Curtis Institute. My question is, how selective are these programs in terms of composition majors? I have been composing and improvising for a number of years, and currently attend MSM precollege. Do you think that it is reasonable for me to be applying to these schools?
These are certainly among the most selective schools, and I would also comment that they vary in their aesthetic. You can take the attitude that you will apply to the schools you really want to go to, and if it doesn’t work out, try again. But with the apparent experience you have, this is most likely a good list.
Others are Juilliard, Bard, Ithaca, Lawrence, Hartt, Purchase, BU, Indiana, CIM, CCM…and many others.
As a composer, you also have the option of applying to a college or university and doing a BA, with or without a strand in composition- as I am sure you know. If you have experience and work that you feel good about, a music supplement with a recording of your work, a resume, and letters of recommendation related to music can help a lot.
Do you have good live recordings of your work? Is MSM Prep advising you?
