Composition Program Suggestions

While Interlochen and Tanglewood are more prestigious (and more difficult to get into), I'd suggest you also look at the composition program at the New York Summer Music Festival in Oneonta, NY. http://www.nysmf.org Although this program was "new" last year, it was previously run at Hartwick by the same people, many of whom work at Curtis during the year. They bring in top notch guest artists.

If money is an issue (these programs are quite expensive!), your son could apply to be a counselor in training and can then attend the full six-week program for half price. Or he can choose to attend for one two-week session, if he doesn't want to spend the whole summer away. My D went to Hartwick for 2 summers when it was run by the NYSMF people, but as an instrumentalist. She really enjoyed her time there, but eventually moved on to bigger and better places.

My son will second the Walden plug for a summer of music comp exploration. He was there for 4 summers and is involved with the Alumni group now.

Look at Luther College with composition professor, Brooke Joyce.
