Computational Linguistics at UCSD, Northeastern

Hey guys, I’m a high school senior who’s been admitted into the undergraduate Linguistics programs at UCSD and Northeastern University. I’m particularly interested in pursuing a Masters in Computational Linguistics in my graduate career (interested natural language processing, artificial intelligence and the like), and I was wondering which school you guys think I should pick in order to best prepare myself for CompLing in my undergraduate career.

In order to major in CompLing, I should probably pursue a double major/combined major/major and minor in Linguistics and Computer Science, but since I’ve only been admitted to the Linguistics program at both schools, I would have to try to transfer into the respective CS programs and take CS classes at each to pursue CompLing, which scares me a bit: I’ve heard that it’s near impossible to transfer into computer science at UCSD, in particular.

As for additional information influencing my decision, I’ve been admitted to the Honors program at Northeastern with a considerable scholarship, and I’m absolutely in love with the feeling of going to school in the city. They also offer co-op, which is a large factor in my attraction to the school. I am in-state for UCSD, though, so the tuition is a bit cheaper, and of course, it’s by the beach, which is nice.

In general, though, how do these schools compare for the resources they offer to Linguistics students? Does anyone know anything about resources offered towards those interested in Computational Linguistics in particular at either school?

Thanks in advance!
