I was accepted to NEU for early action into the Computer Science and Business program in CCIS because I would like to do both BUT with business (finance) as the main focus. Is this program for me? I am worried the focus will be computer science because it is in said college. Should I ask to switch to the school of business? I'm kind of freaking out. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

The more difficult major in terms of scheduling (and most people would agree, in subject matter as well) is Computer Science. All of the CS/Business duals I know are Computer Science first, Business second.

Keep in mind that CS/Business is not just “Well I want Business, but I want to prove I can do technology”. That is a Business degree with a MIS specialization. CS/Business is programming, database design, interface, logic, etc… and you also take one or two courses each in finance, accounting, management, etc. You can’t skate your way through CS, even as a dual.

(Everyone always says that they “should have been a computer science major” when they are graduating and realize they can’t pay their bills. I personally consider CS to be a calling-- and one that a lot of people get called to and then realize they can’t actually do it.)

However, if you are totally fine with CS and just think you want to do MORE of business, then don’t freak out. “Business” is not a major that gets you things, including jobs. It’s not like you take a few finance classes and get a job on Wall Street. It’s your grades and your connections that get you internships that get you jobs on Wall Street. And considering that investing banks are continuing to lay off bankers (finance majors) and operations teams (finance, business, pre-law…) by the thousands, it’s the people with a strong technical background that have the best chances.

And I’m allowed to make melodramatic statements about the banking industry because I work two blocks from Wall Street.

I suppose my question is considering the fact that I want to do business primarily and THEN CompSci, should I try to switch out? Is this program a good way to get into banks (relative to the business school)?

That entirely depends on what you mean by “get into banks”. Get into their technology analyst programs? Get into their operation analyst programs? Get a trading and sales job?

(Yes, Yes but not needed, Not at all)

It’s really about what you want to DO. Again, CS is a tech degree. If you never ever ever want to work with tech, then why do a tech degree?
