Computer science at Sarah Lawrence

I'm interested in any thoughts and experiences people may have about the computer science program at Sarah Lawrence. I know that there are many commenters on Col Conf that believe that most LACs have wimpy computer science programs. That's all fine and good, but after a lot of thinking, I believe that CS programs can offer different things to different people. A person who is arty and interested in CS might do very well at Sarah Lawrence, because you can combine programs. Whereas he/she may not emerge with an engineering degree from Sarah Lawrence, neither would he/she emerge with being able to apply the creative arty side of computers at many engineering schools. Further, the interactions with professors at SL may be perfect for the student interested in combining these disciplines. Additionally, since SL is known for its writing and Oxford-style inquiry about the writing, this can only be good for creating a well-rounded person who has the means to pursue his/her vision.

Will the CS degree at SL teach you skills that are universally recognized in the field? In other words, does SL use industry-recognized languages, etc.? Or is it something esoteric that is not transferable outside of SL?

Is it possible to combine disciplines described above? CS, Writing, arts--all at SL?

Thank you.

Sarah Lawrence’s CS offerings are extremely limited, based on its catalog:

CS at Sarah Lawrence should be thought of something that a student primarily studying something else can take a few courses in, rather than take the range of courses that would be equivalent to a CS major at a school with a good CS department.
