Tulane sure is coming back. It’ll be fielding all of the sports it did before the storm, and now it’s going to be re-adding some academic programs too…

But after the storm, TU had to dropp a few sports to ensure that the money was being spent on a recovery effort… Now, they’re going to be adding two sports programs for our freshman year (2011-2012) to bring the number back to 16, what is was before the hurricane.

Is this true about the return of computer science? Classes? Seminars? Minor? major? I have texted my s but haven’t heard back yet. Engineering Physics is back, but hasnt gotten final accreditation yet.

^^wasn’t there someone on the Tulane forum who was choosing between it and another school that was specifically concerned that comp sci was NOT at Tulane??

I hope he/she didn’t choose elsewhere as a result of this kinda “late” development?

I wrote to Dean Altiero about this, and he was kind enough to give me a quick reply despite being on break. Here is what he said, in it’s entirety:

I think that is all there is to say on the topic for now, at least factually.

Thanks, FC. That makes sense. A program has to be built up like that, with classes, faculty, etc. Glad to see they are moving in that direction.

this is a great example of how Tulane is coming back! it certainly deserves a much higher ranking than it currently has, and i think the return of computer science will encourage more people to attend. Tulane seems like such a great place, and I’m happy that it is recovering from the hurricane.

Good luck at Rice, Petey! Also a super great school.

As I told Dean Altiero, my D will also be very happy to see this development. Even though her majors are far afield from CS, she wanted to take some intro courses and really couldn’t find anything. By the time she gets back from China Fall 2012, there should be some things for her to pick from.

I don’t want to make the claim that the interest here on CC made this development happen; in fact I am quite sure it would have at some point anyway. But it is possible we were a catalyst for either making it happen sooner than it otherwise might have and/or helping make the decision easier for Tulane. It’s all about communication!

I haven’t had a chance to look, but it would be too late anyway for an incoming freshman. Can’t win them all, but it is a big step in the right direction for the future.
