Computer Science Minor With Accounting/Finance Major

Hello CC,

I am currently a business administration major with concentrations in finance and accounting, and I am seriously considering doing a minor in computer science. I took an accounting information systems class last semester, but my final grade was a bit mediocre in my opinion (B-, and I’m an A student). My low grade was a combination of a bad professor, lack of motivation from a family crisis, and my illiteracy with computers. I want to pursue a computer science minor, specifically one with classes that pertain to computer information systems, so that I can better understand computers and computer systems.

I have printed off course lists for computer science from my university and local community college (which I won’t say for the sake of anonymity), and to summarize, I need two lower division programming courses that I have to take, and I have a large selection of upper division courses to choose from, which include courses in computer information systems and various programming languages.

Is there anyone out there who is familiar with accounting and programming involved who can tell me which programming language(s) are used in accounting, and might even be able to tell me which areas of computer information systems (besides SQL, which I’m a bit familiar with) I can study? I’m sorry if my questions are a bit vague, but like I said, I am pretty much illiterate when it comes to computers.

Please reply using simplified computer language so that I can understand lol.

VBA/SQL are the top two. Everything else really just becomes niche for accounting. If I had to pick a good 3rd choice, I’d pick Python, but I may be biased.

Disclaimer: I have an accounting background with some experience in finance. All of my CS knowledge comes from on-the-job or self-taught off youtube/internet.
