Computer Science or Computer Engineering?

Which is better at Columbia?

I hear Computer Engineering deals mostly with hardware, whereas Computer Science deals mostly with software.

But my impression is that Computer Engineering just does both the hardware and the software at the end of the day, and seems like a stronger major.

But which field is Columbia better known for? Or are they about the same?

If you’re applying to Columbia General Studies, then I don’t believe Computer Engineering is an option. I think that’s only available thru SEAS, although perhaps it’s available though Columbia College and I am simply unaware. Are you applying thru General Studies, or is this question meant for Columbia College?

There’s no distinction between major choices between GS and Columbia College. Individual colleges do not administer majors. The Faculty of Arts and Sciences is responsible for that. Thus, any major that is available to GS students is also available to CC students, and vice versa. Individual colleges really have no say in academic matters, that job is under the auspices of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences. Having said that, SEAS has different majors than GS and CC, and Computer Engineering is one of them.
