My son is starting to compile his "list"of schools to apply to. He is co-captain of his school's FIRST Robotics team (3 year member), has held leadership positions in youth group for 3 years, member of NHS, Mu Alpha Theta, has tons of community service, internships, own computer repair biz, has created several websites, 31 and 32 on ACT (34 if superscored), compelling personal story. Location, gender ratio, cost are not factors. He just wants a terrific computer science program. He has no difficulty finding "reaches" but he needs help finding matches and safeties. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

what about Clemson? (school that I go to). We have some great science/engineering programs here and you should definitely get in.

SUNY Stony Brook
UMD
U Waterloo
U Toronto
Purdue

Check out UW-Madison. I’m not sure about undergrad, but definately a top-10 grad school program. I’m working with Bilge Mutlu, an HCI professor right now, and I can tell you any information about the city itself that you want to know (I have lived here my whole life); however, I do not attend the UW , so I don’t know much about student life

Thanks for these suggestions. Can anyone suggest additional computer science programs located within smaller schools? Purdue, Wisconsin, Md are all pretty big.

Harvey Mudd College is a small school and Caltech is a small undergraduate program. However, both would be reaches.

Computer Science prestige is very research driven, which makes it hard for smaller schools to get a name in it (outside the tippy top). Chances are that there are plenty of schools that would teach him what he needs to know.

SUNY Stony Brook and UMass-Amherst are both very good CS schools. U Utah and U Arizona are pretty good too.

For mid-size to smaller schools, UT-Dallas comes to mind.

RPI would not be a safety, but it might be worth a look as a match.

UMBC
University of Maryland - Baltimore County

U Washington?

WPI, RPI, RIT?

I’m not sure that those would be safeties, but they aren’t as hard as say MIT/Caltech/Harvey Mudd/etc., yet have similar environments and great CS/engr programs.

University of Illinois is a fantastic CS school, and it can be a solid match/safety if you’ve got the stats. They have a brand new CS building and a great program.
