I am a Virginia resident looking to major in Computer Science. Does UVA or VA Tech have a more respected Computer Science program? I know UVA is a higher ranked university in general but I would like specific information on how they compare strictly on the strength of their computer science curriculum.

FWIW Tech has had its Comp Sci program ABET accredited for four more years, and its Comp Eng accreditation for nine years longer. Beyond that you can compare the course offered at each school by looking them up.

Both are great schools. One of my sons graduated from UVa, the other just graduated from Virginia Tech (both in engineering). In addition to comparing course offerings, also look at personal fit and employment issues. You can see where VT grads in CS are employed on their post graduation survey. Employers that employed more than one VT CS grad in 2012 included: Amazon, Booz Allen Hamilton, Deloitte, Freddie Mac, and Microsoft. Good luck!

“Does UVA or VA Tech have a more respected Computer Science program?”

Is your HS more respected than the one across town? I think others evaluate you as an individual graduate more so that the HS. The same is true, to a certain extent, with your university. Both UVA and Tech are respected universities and you should do fine at either institution. The differences will be more in how you feel you fit in at either university. Some students are turned off by the UVA vibe. Others prefer it. If you haven’t already toured each campus, plan on doing so this Fall.

Good luck with your applications and your decision.
