Computers

I don’t think I’ve seen anyone here post a thread regarding computers, so I’ll post a few questions that someone could answer:

We all know the battle between Macs and PCs, but in the long run which laptop operating system would you recommend at UC Davis? For example, when you take more extensive courses are there programs that specifically run on PCs and not Macs, you get my drift?

How does wireless work at Davis? I hear there is no wireless access in the dorms.

There's not much of a difference. I guess there may be an advantage to having a PC since for my stats class textbook came with a supplemental cd that was Windows only....but we never used it and I never used it.

No wireless in the dorms. You can use your laptop on campus and print using one of the printers in one of the labs.

I have wireless in my room

There's no wireless in the dorms, but they don't really enforce it. I have a wireless router in my room, and I just password protected it and haven't had trouble... The LRC (24-hour study room) at each dorm complex has free WiFi...

you probably don't need a mac unless you're a design major or something. and with bootcamp for the intel macs, there isn't any programs that'll run on a pc but not macs. so it's up to personal preference.

for wireless you just connect to moobilenet and log in using your kerberos account. here's a map list of the network coverage http://wireless.ucdavis.edu/maplist.cfm

Personally, for programming I prefer a Mac because MacOS X is based on UNIX. Windows can be modified to a programming environment, but it's usually easier to just get MacOS X. You can also use Linux, but I found that MacOS X combines a good programming environment (not only a UNIX shell, but XCode free of charge), and a easy user interface.

Otherwise, you can use a PC. =)
