Computers

Two questions:
does anyone know if they have decided what computers we (2012) are getting? I think they said they were going to decide in May but idk4s. My other question is if cadets take their laptops home with them during leave? If so, can you log onto to wireless networks and wifi without all of the website restrictions?

I am pretty sure that you can log onto any sites when you are away. Correct me if I'm wrong, it is just the AFA's server which restricts access to certain sights, so if you are using another internet connection you wont have that problem.

yeah I think that's how it works

they have no way of clogging your internets while you are away because your traffic isn't routed through their tubes

Remember though, that your computer is still DoD-regulated and is technically only supposed to be used for official business, so I wouldn't recommend visiting any... "questionable" sites that you couldn't access at the Academy.

Not that any of you would have that problem - just thought I'd throw that out there.

I think Gateway is the official computers that they use in the Air Force. Dell is garbage, honestly and HP is just as well. Customers have not complained about Gateway so I think that's why there using them. So I've heard/read...

I've heard from a friend of mine in the Class of 2010 that the Gateways they were issued have actually been problematic. Can anyone from 2010 confirm/deny this?

2011 actually has fujitsu Tablets that for the most part work well. I haven't had any serious complaints with mine.

What exactly does DOD regulated entail? I feel like Im being watched right now! ;)

no myspace/yout tube, stuff like that.

If you read your candidate book, it said our laptops would be similiar in nature to 2011's.

AFPJ - The Gateways that 2010 have are terrible. I wouldn't count on seeing any more Gateway laptops at the Academy in the near future.

Wildblue - It means that you consent to monitoring and inspection. If "the man" wants to, he can check in on what sites you're visiting and what you have on your laptop at any time.

AFPJ - Distractions like that keep us sane.

USAFAbound - As a matter of fact, I did read my candidate book! :) what a wealth of knowledge eh!

Petko - I've heard some interesting stories about "the man" at the academy. Would you say he is omnipresent? As in Cameras and what not . . .

Not at all! This isn't 1984 here. ;)

Well that's good to hear!
