Do most high schoolers that conduct research work under the supervision of a professor (as in, they work towards X professor's goals, not their own) or do they generally get supervision from the professor, but work towards their own independent project? Thanks.

A little of both, along with a very major third option, which is that the student comes up with his or her own project and does it themselves, perhaps only contacting a professor or teacher/adviser when questions arise. S was an Intel SF and he did it the third way.

^ My project (Siemens & STS) was also done sans a professor but I had a hs teacher
who helped as an advisor I could share my ideas with and discuss.
