Barron’s books do work for some people btw.

Well, it could be for several reasons. Let’s find all possible answeres for it. Well…first look at name of book BARRON’S 2400 and we can guess that it’s not 1th grade questions. Hence, barron’s is made their 2400 book harder than real exam, in order to, when you will see real exam it will be easy. Ok, for example writing section multiple-choice. My score in BB was 20-25 raw. When I opened barron’s i was shocked my score was 10 raw. Thus, Barron’s 2400 is harder than real exam, but if you could solve barron’s 2400 you would make real exam in “one breath”, i.e very easily. Now, let’s go to “conditional probability”, well, i consider they made questions for this topic to “cut down” all posible problems with probability on real exam. Notice that most questions for probability, factorials are 5 [H] questions. Therefore, it has connection to sat topic. If you aimed for great score use barron’s 2400, it’s very helpful when your score is 2000+.

Maybe it won’t be on SAT I, but as I said above, it helps to get high score. BARRON’S has got it’s own “style” of teaching, so, barron’s isn’t very bad as you say. Students with 1500-2000 are abhoring this book because it makes their real scores lower but for 2000+ it’s very useful.

Barron’s 2400 is good. But Maths section is CRAZY (for me). I always get ~4 questions wrong. So my score is about 700. ![]()
I know 3 out of the 4 questions I get wrong, but because of my stupid careless mistakes (sometimes I just don’t read the question properly), I get them wrong.
But there’s this ONE question, in the exam, which I just don’t know how to solve. :|

Moreover, I’ve heard that doing the math section quickly once, and then solving it again, helps to rectify mistakes, if any. But my problem is, I solve the section like 5 minutes before time, then I devote the remaining 5 mins working on the questions I couldn’t solve, leaving no time for revision/checking answers.

I took a timed CB test.

I missed 2 math questions, and got 2 wrong. GREAT.

At the risk of being called dogmatic again, allow me to share my thoughts about this.

First, there is NO value whatsoever for a book to present material that is beyond what is usually tested on the SAT. This is where Barron’s misses the mark, as they have done so often in the past. The College Board is straightfoward on the scope of its tests. For this reason, one should not expect questions that show up on the GRE, the GMAT, or the SAT Subject Tests to be covered in the regular SAT. Barron’s is simply recycling and repackaging irrelevant material.

However, this is really NOT important, if one uses what I call the SOURCE books correctly. Those books are a good source to refresh one’s memory and provide a reference to clarify concepts that DO show on practice tests. Use those books as you would use a dictionary or a text book, but do not base your practice plan on what is covered or not covered. And, for the nth time, do use the proposed tests as they are often inaccurate and misleading.

If you use the books correctly, you will never have to spend on the irrelevant material that is presented.

xiggi, I agree with you on both counts. Some books have extraneous information, and there is a way of reading a book. But just so we are on the same page, Barron’s SAT study guide and Barron’s SAT 2400 are two different books. One’s long, boring, tedious and for most part of it, redundant (read: Barron’s SAT study guide), the other is a very short, concise book focussing on very few strategies.

I’m glad you shared your views. I have read many of your posts, and would be happy if you would share your views on how I can improve my Math section scores. I am scoring about ~700. I get about 4 questions wrong in math, ~1 in every section. And many times it’s the “E” level question! I am not bad in math, I score a 99% in my Boards in Math. It’s just that I always find the time available to be less. I know about the ‘review every question’ strategy, but I finish the section 5 min before time, and use this time to work on problems which I couldn’t solve earlier. So that ‘quicky do the section, and then do it again’ strategy is not for me.
How do I improve?
