Im currently confused as to what schools are permitted to do with your information. I have recently found out my university (not to slander it, YET) has released grade information without my consent. Isn't there a law against this? Is there some action I should take?

To whom was the information released?

There is a rather lengthy section in our “student rules and regulations” book that talks about what the University can and cannot do with information that some might consider confidential. I would imagine there is a similar section in your regulations. I know here at the U of M (minnesota) they will release grades to various student organizations and potential employment recruiters without your consent. Not that these people are specifically interested in you, they just go to the admissions office and say give me a list of everyone in X department with a 3.5 GPA and up. or whatever their criteria is. The good news is you can often opt out of this if you so choose. But IMHO you would be better off letting the school have the ability to give your grades out to potential employers. it can only help you in the future. And if my understanding of the opt-out is correct, than it means the school pretty much seals your file. but I dont have any experience in this area so I would encourage you to look through your school’s policies.

I believe you seek the FERPA:

I mean I guess my school released my GPA because they publish President’s (4.0) and Dean’s (3.25+ for freshmen, 3.5+ for everyone else) Lists every semester on the school website…
