I applied to grad school for next semester and I got an email from the school yesterday saying I had been accepted and that I would receive a letter with more information soon. Today, I got a letter in the mail except it was a rejection letter. By the time I got the letter, the admissions office was closed so I haven't been able to talk to anyone from the school yet. Needless to say, I'm really anxious. Has anyone else had an experience like this?

Either the admissions office is messed up, or one of those letters is incorrect. What was the wording on them? Was either of them provisional? Did you double check the name on the letter to see if it was the wrong one? Is there an online portal you can check for acceptance? Good luck - that must be frustrating!

Contact the department immediately. Mistakes happen, or it may be that you are misinterpreting one of the letters - cut to the chase and call them.

Thanks for the replies. I called them as soon as I could when I got the letter but like I said, the office was closed so no one was there. I sent several emails and will hopefully hear something tomorrow morning.

The email beings with:

Congratulations! You have been accepted for Spring 2014 at the University of Maryland School of Social Work. An official acceptance letter will be arriving shortly, but we couldn’t wait to share this exciting news.

The letter beings with:

Regrettably, we are unable to offer you a place in the Spring 2014 entering MSW class.

They both are addressed to me. The online portal has yet to update and still only says my application has been submitted. I’ll periodically check for it to change.

It was apparently a computer error and about 10 people got the email saying they were accepted even though they were actually denied. Ah well, nice to have an answer at least.

So sorry, that’s crummy.
