Hi, I'm planning on applying to U of M for Fall 2012, and I am a bit confused about the residential college vs. LSA. So, I guess my main two questions are:

Can I graduate in 4 years with a BS degree from the University of Michigan, while still being a part of the RC?

and

Can I be a pre-med and still be in the residential college?

Any other suggestions?

I would say definitely yes to both. RC’s biggest requirement is the foreign language. It’s 2 intensive 8-credit courses, which reaches you to proficiency. If you pass proficiency you take a 4-credit readings course, which comes to 20 credits total of language. If you don’t pass proficiency you usually have to take a 4-credit accelerated review course and then the following semester you take a readings course, which comes to 24 credits total.

If you don’t do an RC major (which they have around 6–Social Justice and some others), you have to take 4 RC classes. These can be easily fulfilled through 1-credit minicourses or forums (meet-once-weekly clubs, basically). And beyond that, you just have to take 1 arts-related course or somehow fulfill an art-related activity (being part of a school magazine or drama production, etc.).

I believe those are all the requirements, language being the biggest load. If you’re passionate about learning a particular language (doesn’t have to be offered by the RC; could be through LSA if RC doesn’t offer it) and at the same time want to get a BS, then the RC sounds like it’d be right for you.

Ok. Thanks for the advice! (maybe I read into it too much)
