<p>Hello all,
I am currently caught in between which Major I should pursue. Here is some background information.
Currently I am at University of Texas-Austin, and my best friend of 10 years and I are planning on starting a Robotics Company. Mainly the future side of robotics, like human-robotic relations, AI, design and programming of robots, and basically anything you might see in your futuristic T.V. shows. (I know far stretch, save the negative pep talk) Anyways, his plans are to go into EE with a focus on Computer Engineering. My focus is undetermined at this point, mainly because I am not sure which major (EE, CS, CE, ME) would benefit not only our plans, but future job security as well.(Gotta have a back up as a entrepreneur)
now the background on my personality: Since pretty far back I have always had a love with Computers and Technology. Just the thought of building and designing cool and fun things is a great feeling. I used to take apart remote controls to see the chips, and put them back together. I have built personally 3 computers, which I enjoy doing. Its like a challenge to me. Also I am pretty well known as the guy who can fix most of your technological problems, like computer issues, tv issues, anything. I've always considered myself a hands on learner, or simply put I like seeing what I'm doing, and building; but building in the sense of technology. Software has interested me, more in the sense of seeing and creating cool websites, or apps, or even programming different things. Though I have never been one to 100% enjoy sitting for 8 plus hours coding without seeing a result,(if you know what I mean.) I have no problem coding, but building is a more see what your doing kind of thing to me.
I know what each major entails, I've done research on them more, weighed out pros and cons. I am pretty much just looking for some feedback based off of what I have listed above, and based off which one would not only be more suitable for Robotics, but also for future job outlook. I love all of the majors I listed, and I couldn't go wrong with any of them in my eyes; but quadruple majoring would strike me dead at 25, so I need to figure out the best route to go!
Thanks for taking the time to reply!</p>
<p>Apologizes didn’t mean to post twice. </p>
<p>Take this with a grain of salt, because I’m not an engineer, but I don’t think it matters. Pick the major you’re most comfortable with and fill in you technical electives with the classes you think will best help your goal. They have a mechatronics lab at UT. The folks that hang out there will likely have similar interests and might be able to give you a little better local advice. Good luck!</p>
<p>Max Headroom makes a good point, i.e. pick what makes you comfortable and pick appropriate electives. It does however look like the main robotics work at UT is in the ME department.</p>
