I am really confused on what I want to major in and what i want to do in general. I am considering psychiatry but I want to work in international affairs as well, studying trends involving psychiatry in other countries. I don’t even know if this job exists. My parents want me in a more straightforward stem field, like engineering. But I suck at math. I’m not interested in chemistry. I don’t feel any passion for those subjects. My ACT was a 35 in reading, 35 in English, and 28s in math and science. Needless to say, all my life I’ve loved writing, the humanities, and literature (aka non-STEM fields). Im always discouraged from pursuing “useless” majors. I just don’t know what to do. Any ideas to help? preferably stuff that helps me appease judgmental parents.
Psychiatry is a medical specialization; you would have to go to med school and become a doctor.
Psychology involves more math than you’d think. “Studying trends” also involves a lot of math.
Maybe straight up international affairs?
Do you mean Psychology?
Psychiatry is a pre med major, which definitely involves math and chemistry. Majoring in psychology could lead to work in mental health that does not involve certain things only doctors can do, like prescribing drugs.
Population health would study health across countries but that again involves math and statistics. Public health is a more common undergraduate major.
A 28 ACT math is still a good college-ready score. You should be able to handle the math prerequisites for social science or public health majors.
Look into a geography major. It’s often a pretty flexible way to study different parts of the world. Take geographic information systems classes (computer mapping) and it will lead more easily to jobs.
