Congrats everyone- Junior Engineer here

Hello all,

To those accepted- congrats! If you didn’t, don’t worry! Wherever you get into, you’ll come to love it eventually.

That being said, I’m a pretty involved junior civil engineer here at Cornell and I went through this whole process three years ago back in 2012. If you have any questions regarding Cornell life or the engineering curriculum, please ask me here!

Hi, I’m newly admitted to Cornell Engineering and I’m interested in the Greek life here. How do you like the Greek life here? Do you guys have time to have fun?

Hello, grats on getting in!

Greek life is something that’s highly misunderstood even by people here on campus. Speaking mainly about social fraternities, they are essentially a group of guys (that have made it through an internal selection process) that live together, go through school together, and create social gatherings for the general public. The hivemind does exist, however, and some of these groups can be toxic, but most aren’t.

Fraternity parties are usually open to girls or people who are friends with in the fraternity. Non-connected guys may find trouble getting into parties if the fraternity is trying to bounce at the door. Many people view this as extremely sexist and promoting rape culture, but to be honest, this is how our culture operates.

I’m not part of Greek life, but I know many people who are.

Yes, everyone has time to have fun. You have to find a schedule that works for yourself and understand how to prevent yourself from stressing over things that are non-issues in the long-run. Overall happiness, feeling accomplished, and making a difference are way more important than A+'s and 100% complete homeworks.
