Congratulations! Now let's Raise the Fees!

Good job UC Regents. They just passed a 9.3% increase in fees.

UC President Mark Yudof’s proposal for a 9.3 percent systemwide fee increase passed today at the UC Board of Regents meeting.

The vote was 17 to 4, with Lt. Governor John Garamendi, Regent Eddie Island, Regent Odessa Johnson and Student Regent D’Artagnan Scorza voting against the proposal.

“If we don’t increase fees we’ll be over 200 million in debt,” Yudof said before the vote. “You don’t have to enact this fee increase–but you’ll get fewer classes and less access to resources.”

At the meeting, which was held via teleconference, Yudof also said fee increases were likely for the next two years if the state budget does not improve.

Yeah, because education is where California should be hiking fees… ugh.

Thanks Arnie.

Wow like my parents don’t pay enough in taxes and I don’t quality for Financial Aid… -_-

Ouch - 9% increase in the current economy is a killer. My State has not announced any increases yet – they usually wait until around June to spring it on us. It has been 9-10 % both the last 2 years though :(

“Wow like my parents don’t pay enough in taxes and I don’t quality for Financial Aid… -_-”

yeah, seriously.

“The increase in student fees, which have more than doubled over the past seven years, are expected to generate about $152 million, with about one-third set aside for financial aid.”

so we get to pay more for tuition, with a third going to financial aid that we don’t qualify for. that’s a great idea…

[UC raises fees by 9 percent, names new chancellors](http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/n/a/2009/05/07/state/n131219D76.DTL&feed=rss.bayarea)

Raising fees doesn’t bother me so much as the timing. When times are good: “Free tuition for everybody!” When times are bad: “Raise fees.” Seems ass-backwards to me.
