Congratulations to Caltech!

Once again, Caltech is ranked the number ONE university in the WORLD! Congrats...

Some might say the number one in the universe, counting Curiosity roving around on Mars having been sent there by Caltech!

But they appear nowhere in this very important list of colleges and universities who have earned the Jed Foundation Seal for schools with comprehensive mental health programming and suicide prevention programs. Sad, as they had a cluster of suicide deaths as recently as 2009. Please be aware that Caltech legally has “no duty of care” for its adult students. Also, its mental health counselors are not required by California law to diagnose students coming into the mental health center and counselors do not have to write extensive notes. Although this is written into California law, a mental health medical doctor has advised me that any mental health professional embedded in a college or university setting who follows this law and does not diagnose violates the ethics of his or her profession. Buyers, pls beware.

“We are thrilled to be able to announce the first schools in the nation to receive the JedCampus Seal. These schools have shown they employ a comprehensive, community-based approach to mental health care which will result in the identification and care of more at-risk students,” said John MacPhee, Executive Director of The Jed Foundation. “We believe that the implementation of a campus-wide approach to mental health promotion will lead to safer, healthier campuses, and possibly greater student retention.”

The Jed Foundation only publicly recognizes those schools awarded the Seal. The names of participating schools that do not receive the JedCampus Seal are kept confidential. The Jed Foundation provides customized suggestions for enhancements, which can become a road map for assisting schools in creating a comprehensive emotional health program on their campus.

Please join us in congratulating these schools for the excellent work they are doing to support the emotional wellbeing of their campuses.

What an incredibly necessary and pertinent thread derailment. It’s a shame that your son attempted suicide but that does not mean that you should commandeer a thread about something else.

Hopefully I get in to Caltech so that I can also become a member of this world class institution.
