Hello,
I am a current incoming freshman for Cal Poly Pomona (undeclared major, but I'm planning on specialising in Microbiology with a program in pre-dentistry).
Since I intend to attend either McGill, USC, or UoP for dental school, would it be in my favour to apply to those schools asap (for pre-dentistry Fall 2015) or would I need to wait at least a year before they accept my college grades? Or should I stick to Cal Poly for 4 years as a bio major and apply to dental school?
Also, what is the dental graduate program for McGill like? I know it was rated as top 10 in 2008, but I can't find any info on it after that.
(If relevant, my stats are 3.9 weighted GPA/3.7 UW with a 1900 SAT.)
Thanks for reading!

McGill is costly (and unrealistic with a 1900 SAT if microbiology is your thing) with no financial aid (even OOS for Cal Poly Pomona costs less than international microbiology tuition at McGill, $CAD31k yearly)…

For transferring: 3.7+ is recommended for USC and McGill microbiology

For dental school: 3.8+ will help you at McGill, but what DAT can get you an interview will get you an interview at USC or UofP.

Thanks for the straightforward answer (as well as the financial warning)! :)

I was planning on retaking the SAT, but I heard that as a transfer student app, McGill does not consider SAT scores. The info on their website just lists pre-req courses (1 semester of integral calculus, 1 semester of differential calculus, 2 semesters of lab sciences) as required to apply.

Also, assuming I miraculously have the money and grades for McGill, does that mean I would be able to transfer at the earliest in Fall 2016?

Thanks again!

Yes. Please go to University of Phoenix. It’s appropriate for someone as prestige obsessed as you.

In a dentistry context, UofP: University of the Pacific (Dugoni School of Dentistry).

It’s a little premature to hand out target DAT scores but, if I am not mistaken, dental school asks for less, GPA-wise, than medical school. Whereas UofP Dugoni and USC Ostrow both report average GPAs in the 3.5 range, since McGill Dentistry is a foreign, public dental school, in-province students take up the majority of the slots.

Last year, at McGill Dentistry, 15 graduate-entry matriculants were in-province students (as well as all Dent-P slots, i.e. accelerated dentistry) and 8 matriculants were out-of-province (don’t know how many are Canadian and how many are internationals among those 8). And, even among out-of-province, priority will generally be granted to Canadian citizens. I would likely say that, even at 3.8/22, you’d stand a better chance at UPenn/Columbia for dental school than at McGill unless you somehow hold Canadian citizenship.

Aim for 21+ on the DAT…

Remember that volunteering, shadowing and other healthcare activities matter as far as dentistry is concerned.

Thank you very much for all the info and advice. Originally I wanted to study OOC, but I think a study abroad program may be easier for me than a transfer into McGill.

I think I will try to transfer into the undergrad program for UofP and see how it goes from there.

Again, thanks so much for all the help!
