Considering Engineering.

I'm currently a student in college. I have been attending a local community college for 2 years now and have been playing around with different majors... I have come to the conclusion that I would enjoy engineering most. I, however, have a couple other majors in mind. Pre-Med and Mathematics. Now I was considering going with Mathematics rather than Pre-Engineering because I was told that I could go on with an Engineering major.

I want to know what to do. Is it worth getting into engineering if you love it? I do love the how of things and figuring out how to make them better. I love technology.

I am considering Electrical Engineering, but I also would like to do something a bit more hands on. Maybe you can help me decide which discipline to go into. I do like money, but that isn't the driving force behind this decision.

Here are links to the three degrees I am considering. Oh, I'm 20 will be 21 in June... I just hope I didn't wait too long.

Pre-Engineering -- http://www.occc.edu/CourseCatalog/Pre-Engineering-AS.pdf

Mathematics -- http://www.occc.edu/CourseCatalog/Mathematics-AS.pdf

Pre-Medicine -- http://www.occc.edu/CourseCatalog/Pre-Medicine-AS.pdf

Thanks for any and all help you provide!!!

You don’t plan on getting your engineer degree or plan on going to med school with degree from community college… right?

I suggest you transfer to abet accredited college for engineer degree… not from community college.

If I did do pre-med I would obtain my associate’s here then go to a 4-year university for my bachelor’s. Same with engineering.

You would need to transfer after your first year at a CC IF…your local big quality 4-year school does NOT have good arrangements with the local CC’s.

If you are in some state like Maryland, you can actually do 2 years at a CC and still transfer into U-Maryland and do well. It is pretty known in my geographic area (Maryland) that the U-Maryland has worked with the local CC’s to really prepare students for the last 2 years at U-Maryland.

Not all states do this.

The CC I attend OKCCC works well with transfers to UCO, OU, and others around here. Their associate’s programs are specifically designed to lead into bachelor’s at 4-year institutions.

Ok… let us know when you get an acceptance letter from your state university. If you don’t even get the acceptance, we would be giving advice to an idiot who would just get an 2yr degree with fat chance of being an engineer/doctor.

I have already been accepted to OU and OSU with all my credits transferable. I didn’t go because I was unsure of what I wanted to do and I didn’t want to waste $8-12,000 a semester and no know what I want to do.

I have since talked to both the medical and engineering transfer heads at OU and they have told me that it would be best for me to get an AS from OKCCC and then come back.

Or should I consider getting this associate’s?

Computer Science – http://www.occc.edu/IT/page35.pdf

I’m looking more into electrical engineering than any other field.

Do any of you know what it’s like out there for software engineers? Is that what kind of career I would get with a CS degree? Or could I take the CS associates and go for a bachelors in EE?

^^ More or less. With a computer science degree and if you are personally excellent in writing codes in languages like fortran, C, Java and MAtlab…I doubt you will remain unemployed. The basic work, but not restricted to, a software engineer is either Testing or else programing the code. My bro is in a company which creates computer solution of a problem of NGO’sm Banks, Universities, shops and so on.

I haven’t done much with code. I dabbled a bit in high school, but then I just got busy with other things. I’ll probably pick it up again though. Get good at it and see what happens.

Were you saying that the CS degree would be good for EE?

See nowadays, it very difficult to differentiate between them. For EE you got to have extensive knowledge on CS. Thus it is true for the vice-versa. Pick up your “dabbing” skills once again, and you should do good. :)

Thanks man, I will get back into it once this semester is over. I tried to get into the medical stuff… all this memorization sucks. Can’t wait to do math again.

^^^ Haha all the best :)
