Will I be in danger? I’m looking at VU Amsterdam in the Netherlands for Computer Science. I just have been very freaked out by the recent Manchester attack over at England…
You are statistically more likely to die in a car accident or from food poisoning than in a terrorist attack. Nonetheless, I’m assuming you’re not too freaked out to ride in a car or eat. Here’s an article that may help you.
If you are concerned look at Canadian universities, like Waterloo, UT or UBC
Personally, as a NY’er I feel like one is less likely to a victim in a terrorist attack if they are in a rural area, but that’s just me.
Nobody can predict or guarantee your safety. But I agree with TooOld, Canadian schools can be a nice compromise. For a university that is very inexpensive & in a place very different from the U S, check out Memorial University of Newfoundland.
According to the British Foreign Office, Netherlands and Canada both have the same terrorism threat level (3).
If you want to go to Europe with a low terrorism threat, then Iceland, Ireland, Switzerland, Poland, Estonia, Lithuania, Latvia, Czech Republic, Slovenia and Moldova all have a terrorism threat level of 1 (an attack is unlikely)
In case you were wondering, both the US and the UK have a threat level of 4 (an attack is highly likely) right now.
Omg. Sorry for this super cynical viewpoint, but you are far more likely to be killed here in the good old USA by a lunatic with a semi automatic. Massacres of that nature are far less likely in Europe. You can do a little research by the way, because terrorism has been around for decades. I believe it was at its peak in the 70s.
I did study abroad when the IRA was putting bombs in trash cans all over London and the UK. I never felt in danger. As another person said, your odds are far worse everytime you get in a car. The omnipresent media distorts reality. I won’t stop going anywhere becasue of terrorism. Then they get what they want, and I won’t give it to them if I can help it.
For some grim perspective: 32 were killed in the Virginia tech shooting. Ten more than the Manchester attack. And the U.S. still has the sad disitnction of being the site of the largest attack in a single day, on 9/11.
You can’t go through life worrying about what is unlikely to happen.
