Well this kind of puts DS considering Grinnell, it had been a strong match, but no way he is going anywhere near this.

Surprised since this is was college considered somewhat liberal in thought and progressive, one less app for them now.

Gun magazine supplier expands in Iowa college town

Why would the presence of that distribution center put a student off the college? The town governance is supporting this institution with tax incentives etc. – not the college. Have you been to the town of Grinnell? There isn’t much there, and the few mile drive from I80 to campus is pretty rural with a Walmart, I think, and a few truck repair type shops. When you get to town, there is about an 8 block by 8 block stretch, with a lovely community park, great organic grocery store, and a movie theater. I can imagine that the decision to support this project, with jobs coming into the community, makes sense for the local government. Of course, applicants are free to decide where their own breaking point is, and if that is it for your student, then so be it.

Thanks for the info, I agree, it only added to our, Why Grinnell? conversation, when we saw the article, it just confirmed and we did more research and we all agreed, it is not the place for DS14

I have an application pending and several relatives and friends attending. I was aware of the towns decision but it has zero to do with the school. It’s an amazing institution with an endowment among the top 20 in the nation allowing it truly remain independent of local government.
