Hi,

I will have my AA in December. I haven't looked into FSU until now when I was exploring my college choices. It seems as though FSU has a decent biology undergrad program. If I went to FSU would this affect my chances of getting into the only veterinary school in Florida which is UF? I applied to UF as well, so that would increase my chances of getting into their grad program, but I'm not sure that my statistics are competitive at their institution. I was wondering if my statistics would at least stand a chance at FSU. I have a 3.65 unweighted GPA, but plan to bring it up to a 3.75 after I finish this semester. I have a 3.8 preprofessional GPA. I work at my community college as a certified tutor. I also intern with exotic and domesticated animals. In addition, I took on the leadership position as president at our campus for the international honor society (PTK). I would like to be chanced and see if this institution would suit me. Thank you.

25 views and no response? Geez thanks :(

A 3.65 overall GPA and an AA will get you into FSU or UF as a transfer student. As to admission to the vet school, I doubt it makes any difference if your degree comes from UF or FSU. As a strong student you should look at more vet schools than just the one in Florida.

Parent2noles I thank you for the encouragement. Honestly, I know of a few people who got denied to UF with a 3.6 GPA. That’s close to mine as a matter of fact. There are some schools that I am looking at out of state, but I’d rather stay in FL because in state tuition is way cheaper than out of state. If I choose to go to FSU, I hope UF’s grad school won’t look down upon me. I have heard that these schools do not get along.

The FSU-UF rivalry is confined mostly to the sports arena. Sure, there is a lot of rah-rah school stuff but there is a lot of cross-over at the faculty and graduate level between these two schools. I’d not worry too much about this, but UF is the “farm school” in Florida. There are a lot of vet schools and if you really want to be a vet I’d suggest applying to a fair number to ensure admission.

You have a good chance at FSU and this will not be a detriment to applying to Vet school.

lavender19, what kind of animals are you working with? I’m applying to FSU for next year as well and am hoping to be a vet. I own a fennec fox. Not sure if you have heard of those.

Thank you everyone from your responses. FSU seems like a great school and I am going to apply. I think I will be stressed at UF because of all the others I would have to compete with. I know there are bright kids at FSU as well. I’m just going put all my effort into everything. I know if I choose a different major things would be a whole lot easier. I love Biology and I’m even certified to tutor that. The prevet prereqs are just ridiculous though, they are the same as premed. Prevets must go a step further and complete inorganic chem I and II though. Hopefully I chose the major that suits me and eventually the school that will fit me best.

individualized: I have worked with numerous tigers and lions. I work with wildlife birds too. Time to time, I will work with cats and dogs. I prefer the exotics. I like fennec foxes and I am familiar with those. I want to bring my dog with me to college, but I do not know if that’s possible.

I don’t want you to have some sort of false hope, as FSU is no picnic at all. I am a graduate and you will find those who seem to brush by the work yet garner straight As. You will marvel at how effortlessly they earn the grades in extremely tough work. Then you see those who struggle over what appears to be the simplest task or those who just want to party (they flunk out quick) and you never hear from them again.

Caveat emptor…there is little or no difference between these flagship schools.

I think FSU is better than UF for a host of reasons, but being easier is NOT one of them!

Don’t bring a dog to college with you. My cousin in the law college brought one this term and had to send it home already. She’d walk it at 6 a.m. and didn’t get back to her apt. until midnight to walk it again. It just didn’t work out and wasn’t fair to the animal.

If you have a fennec fox, tell everyone it is a chihuahua so you don’t have to get all sorts of special permissions and to avoid exotic animal hassles with landlords and such!

parents2noles may you tell me some reasons why fsu is better? I do not care for football teams and who is better. I am aiming mostly towards academics. I am not saying that FSU will be easy. In fact, I go to a community college right now. I expect that the courses will be more difficult. I am nervous though because I am not used to large classrooms. Chemistry for me is easy here, but at a bigger institution I would probably not think so. The prevet science classes are hardcore and I know a lot of students will be taking them. It’s when you get into the 3000 and 4000 level classes; they will have less students. I still have to take orgo and physics. I know that I do not have enough time to complete them here. So I am crossing my fingers that I will do well where ever I go…

I’m a transfer student with a 3.8 GPA and an accounting major. I will transfer to FSU in fall 2011. i will have my AA by early summer (summer a is when ill take my last course). I applied early october and got a response early november. They responded by saying to resend my transcripts after fall term grades are calculated. So I will know in about a months time if I can get into my program of choice. As far as which is better FSU or UF I have a brother who went to UF and loved it and I have a sister who went to FSU and loved that too. I know for me FSU won out because I have spent a lot of time in both places and I think tallahassee is a much better place than gainesville. Gville is just way too country for my taste. Tallahassee isn’t a hugr metro area either but it sure isn’t gville. Other than that both are really good schools.

Lavender,

I think FSU is better than UF for a number of reasons. However, for the most part it is hard to distinguish between the two universities and this commonality should be emphasized more than differences, both perceived and real, should be highlighted. [Both are “flagship” universities in Florida according to Robert M. Berdahl, then Chancellor of UC Berkeley, who described just what qualities constitute a “flagship” university.](http://cio.chance.berkeley.edu/chancellor/sp/flagship.htm) Generally, if you pick the areas of strength each school can offer you’ll be fine.

Some reasons why I think FSU is better include:

UF is overrated in the US News rankings. It is rewarded for a number of things that have little to do with undergraduates, not the least of which is the “peer ranking”.

FSU is underrated in the same rankings. It is far better than the rankings reflect overall.

Tallahassee is more enjoyable than Gainesville. It is more interesting due to the terrain (gorgeous), the history of the area, plus the attraction of being the state capital and having another major state university close by. Plus, Tallahassee is closer to the coast, at least more coast where most would want to go.

UF is basically and essentially a “farm” and technical school. It is spread out and ugly, unless cow pastures make you smile. Gainesville is essentially UF and that is it. Without UF, Gainesville would be a lot more like Williston - sort of nice and country to drive through, but who would want to live there?

UF is based on smoke and mirrors in significant part. For example, the history - the school was really created in 1905, but has all sorts of “reasons” and myths why they use 1853 as a founding date. Basically, they use started using “1853” in the 1930s to avoid being last in line at processions with FSU and FAMU. The rankings scams are related. Then, to add the icing to the cake, so to speak, some recent UF fans project an unfounded arrogance which is widely despised.
