My son is interested in applying to Bard for the music program (non-conservatory). He’s very excited about SO Percussion ensemble, and would like to know what the contemprary drumming scene is at Bard.

I’d recommend writing to James Bagwell, the chair of the music department, and ask him directly about the opportunities for percussionists outside the conservatory. bagwell@bard.edu

I know that Thurman Barker teaches jazz percussion, and leads a percussion ensemble, and there is another jazz drummer who offers lessons. [Thurman Barker](<a href=“Thurman Barker”>Thurman Barker)

But if he wants to study contemporary that is not jazz - I don’t know what’s available to him as an official class - as opposed to just playing in a band (of which there are multitudes!) There is also gamelan and, I see in the course list, next semester there is a Samba workshop.

Thank you so much for the advice. I was out of town for work and couldn’t reply until now. We’ll follow up with your suggestion.

There’s very active samba drumming club. The instructor is inspiring.

Fantastic! I’ll let my son know about the samba group.
