Did the Board of Regents have something to say about the coach of the football team?

"In sworn testimony this month, University of Colorado President Betsy Hoffman refused to offer her thoughts on whether calling a woman the C-word constitutes sexual harassment.

Hoffman did say that she has heard the word - considered one of the most derogatory terms for a woman - used as a "term of endearment."

=========================================

All I know is if I used that as a "term of endearment" with my better half I would be sleeping in the garage and nursing large wounds inficted with a curling iron.

I'm going to keep this short and to the point, because, not only do I live in Colorado and have already heard this story day in and day out (this professor works at CU-Boulder), but there's a ton of posts here anyway.

My two cents? 1) Hamilton has no excuses. He wrote this article in 2001. They knew what it said.
2) I'm all for free-speech, but why should Colorado tax dollars go to paying for this man's salary?
3) These couch-burning alcoholic students at the "free Churchill" rally need a little reality check, and a new hobby.
4) Churchill, despite what he would like you all to believe, is only 3/16ths Indian.

Ward Churchill's salary is a bargain compared to what the state has ponied up for Barnett, Tharp, and Hoffman. With base a bene's we are in the millions for those three winners. If I were the state legislature I'd pull the charter and start over with a new administration and board of regents.

Patuxent:
LOL! Yes, I do remember being upset at the way Hoffman handled the rapes. I could not believe my eyes. I don't recall the Board of Regents weighing in, however, the way it has in the Churchill issue.

1) Hamilton has no excuses. He wrote this article in 2001. They knew what it said. >> Who are the "they" here? College administrations do not vet each and every speaker who gets invited to speak--nor should they (to paraphrase John Kerry). The profs who invited Churchill naively thought that they could limit his appearance to American Indian issues. The naivete lay in thinking people can be compartmentalized, and their outrageous utterances ignored so long as they are not directly relevant to the matter at hand. Even as a speaker on American Indian issues, it was a poor choice, though not one that needed to be vetted by people on high. why should Colorado tax dollars go to paying for this man's salary?>> If the man has tenure, Colorado tax dollars must pay his salary. Whether he should have received it is another matter (highly debatable in my opinion). But he has tenure. Should he be stripped of it? What are the grounds?
4) Churchill, despite what he would like you all to believe, is only 3/16ths Indian.>> That's a whole lot more than the 1 drop rule! I believe that 1/32ths was the litmus test for blacks.

unfortunately, the profs who invited Churchill to speak also have tenure- much to the dismay of most of the Hamilton faculty. This is far from the first unpopular thing they've done there. A long leash has given to the prof to run the Kirkland project-- although I suspect that it will be considerably shortened after this.

nedad -

regarding your earlier post. . .your OP didn't say anything about possible fraud in Churchill's claim of heritage or educational background, that popped up later.

I can list a load of quotes from several prominent commentators and writers that would chill the bones of most Americans, but I still wouldn't have a problem with Hamilton or any college inviting them to speak. . .or rescinding their invitationss. Both the speakers and the schools have to live with their words and actions.

Reidm:

In the case of Fox-Genovese, I think Hamilton acted responsibly by inviting Gloria Feldt of Planned Parenthood as the next speaker on this topic. Abortion is a highly controversial topic and should not be swept under the rug just because it provokes overheated rhetoric, and sometimes extreme actions, on both sides of the issue.
The evolution of Fox-Genovese from the Marxist left to the right is a fascinating topic on its own.

It appears that Ward Churchill is not as concerned about others freedom of speech as his own. He was arrested for trying to stop a Colubus Day parade. He apparently believes that speech is fine so long as it does not constitute "hate speech". I guess calling somebody a "little Eichman" because they happen to answer the phones or sweep the floors in the wrong building is OK but celebrating your Italian American heritage and tipping your hat to a great explorer is not.

I guess it is good that we judge 15th century Europeans based on our own enlightened views rather than that they judge us by theirs. The americas before 1492 was such a wonderful place - assuming you ignore the cannibalism of the Caribs and gruesome ritual slaugter of the Aztecs, the infanticide of the Incas, the incessant inter-tribal warfare, and the mass extinction of species the "indigenous propels" precipitated etc. etc etc.

there is an article about Ward Churchill in today's LA Times for those who are interested. Link is http://www.latimes.com/news/nationworld/nation/la-na-churchill5feb05,0,1094922.story?coll=la-home-nation Free registration is required to view the article.

Heartfelt and timely appeal for sanity from a professor at Hamilton.

That was a well written article that gets to the core of some of the discussion on this thread.

Thank you for posting the link, momrath.

according to today's LA Times, Churchill gave a talk at his U in which he stands by his remarks. "I'm not backing up an inch; I owe no one an apology!" declared Ward L. Churchill in an address to more than 1,000 mostly cheering students gathered at the university's Boulder campus.

Just saw 2 students from the University of Colorado on TV. They said that the students at UC "worship" Churchill....that's scary....

"abortion = the Holocaust. . .more speeches at Hamilton College

Somebody there really likes to stir things up. . .

Now, THAT'S appalling. (and I happen to be agnostic on the general issue of abortion.)
