So, what does everyone think about this guy? Of course everyone has free speech but I think his comments are out of line big time. I understand what he was trying to say about America supposedly bullying other countries, but he said it in the worst way possible. For those of you who haven't heard, he are the statements Ward Churchill made about the victims of 9/11:

[quote]
"But innocent? Gimme a break. They formed a technocratic corps at the very heart of Americas global financial empire the mighty engine of profit to which the military dimension of U.S. policy has always been enslaved and they did so both willingly and knowingly. Recourse to ignorance a derivative, after all, of the word ignore counts as less than an excuse among this relatively well-educated elite. To the extent that any of them were unaware of the costs and consequences to others of what they were involved in and in many cases excelling at it was because of their absolute refusal to see. More likely, it was because they were too busy braying, incessantly and self-importantly, into their cell phones, arranging power lunches and stock transactions, each of which translated, conveniently out of sight, mind and smelling distance, into the starved and rotting flesh of infants. If there was a better, more effective, or in fact any other way of visiting some penalty befitting their participation upon the little Eichmanns inhabiting the sterile sanctuary of the twin towers, Id really be interested in hearing about it.

I think he's an idiot. That said, I will defend his right to be an idiot.

i think people are making a big deal about nothing ... so what he has offensive views ... first amendment

I wonder if one of Ward's family members died on 9/11, would he still say the victims were "little Eichmanns"?

By the way, I saw two of Ward's students on the O'Reilly Factor (which I generally watch for fun only) get completely hosed. Quality TV entertainment.

Well since I haven't read a copy of his thesis I can't comment completely, but it seems that this guy is a little weird. However, I can see his connection in one way - just let me get my point across:

When Mr. Churchill compares 9/11 victims' families to Nazis I think he is centering on propaganda and fear-mongering. Think about it - the Nazis were so powerful because of their massive propaganda moves. What do a lot (though albeit not all) 9/11 victims' families want?? WAY tougher policies on terrorism, EVEN if it means giving up personal freedoms (Patriot Act anyone??...). In this manner, these families fight to the dickens to get these policies initiated, and it seems the general concept of this administration is "either you're with us or against us". In that way, these families call any who oppose the war itself or how the war is being carried out psuedonyms such as "unpatriotic", "commie", "liberal", etc. They impose their own ideology without looking at why some people could actually disagree with our President. In that way, then yes, the 9/11 families are using the same fear-mongering and propagandic tactics.

Of course whenever you compare someone to a Nazi the first thing that comes to mind is genocide, even though the atrocities of the Nazis were much greater than that (like I said before, using fascism, fear-mongering, and propaganda). However, if people would stop being so reactionary they could see the connection that I just made. You don't have to agree with it, but at least acknowledge it. Whenever words get blown out of proportion (Harvard President anyone...) things fall down hill.

I think you need to reread his article. Churchill is saying that the VICTIMS of 9/11 were essentially ignorant, greeding, self-serving, corrupt capitalists.

Most academics at that level are very liberal if not radical in their political views. The only thing that seperates this buffoon and the bum yelling on the corner is his degrees.
