"Professor of Chemistry Kate Queeney opened the 2012-13 academic year with a convocation address met by cheers and foot stomping from students who filled John M. Greene Hall on September 5. 'Every year at this time, as you all suddenly converge on campus, I am struck by how much I’ve missed you,' she told the audience. The traditional academic event is not a staid occasion at Smith. Students often attend dressed in celebratory garb. Referencing the student attire, Queeney quipped, 'Look left. Look right. Don’t wear that to an interview.' "

Enjoy her excellent speech and the roaring enthusiasm!

My D is now 2nd year and LOVES Smith. Ya might wanna check it out if you are a prospect for a top notch school, that happens to be all women. The attitude shown from the clip at Convocation illustrates the way in which profs/admins empower women at Smith -providing professional smarts in a classy manner (and at times crazy), and often with a bit of humor.

Brie, nicely said. My daughter has started her senior year and she ADORES Smith. What seems like ages ago, I remember when we were visiting various schools and the Smith admissions officer said that women make up 60% of the student body at co-ed colleges but only 10% of the leadership positions. What’s wrong with this picture? In her earlier years at Smith, my daughter has held a number of house leadership positions; this year she’s House President. Just one way that Smith is very empowering.
