Cooking freezer ideas for new parents

My daughter is having a baby soon and I want to make some freezer meals and snacks for them. Any favorites that freeze well?

My favorite freezer meals that reheat well are baked ziti and meat and bean chili.

Do you have a FoodSaver vacuum sealer?

Chili and soups are great for sealing.

Quiche is great, a meal in a pie. I just made a couple of bacon cheese spinach ones for dinner, will freeze one. Soups are also good.

Muffins! good for breakfast, snacks, 2am, and you can eat them with one hand! Put some powdered milk in, to up the nutrition.

Dumplings. They would have to be cooked by boiling, not MW nuking, but it is just as quick, and they taste so much fresher than, let’s say, MW frozen lasagna.

I’ve never made a dumpling. Recipes?
Thanks for all the good ideas

Chicken (or beef) enchiladas

Chicken soup minus the noodles (they can add later)

Another vote for enchiladas. Indian curries will also hold up well.

My D is a new mom, and likes making breakfast items in advance, as that is a rushed time of the day. She does breakfast burritos, wraps them individually in foil, then into a freezer ziplock. To reheat, takes off the foil and wraps in a damp paper towel. Cooks 1 min in microwave, then cuts in half and rewraps, then another 60 to 90 seconds. She also does a quiche that’s just stays refrigerated and heated by slice.

This is a good recipe. I think pretty much any recipe for pierogi will work!

We make about 12 dozen pierogis every year. They freeze very well!!

They certainly do! I also make meat-filled (or chicken-filled) smaller dumplings called pelmeni. I don’t bother with sour cream or buttermilk or butter in the dough. Just an egg, some water, a splash of olive oil, a dash of salt, and mix flour in until the dough becomes firm and rollable. Leave it resting for a while before rolling out. There are pelmeni (aka “Russian ravioli” or “Ukrainian ravioli”, lol) molds sold on Amazon to speed up the making process. Kind of like this:

flashback to having twins: favorites were mini muffins, mini quiche that could just microwave, loaves of banana or pumpkin bread for easy pick me ups. i am not a snacker, but became when when feeding two babies. a meal train organized by friends family was also a huge help and most made enough for two meals or to freeze.

You can also make a pierogi lasagna called “lazy man pierogi’s”. Cracked or damaged pierogis are called fallen angels.

Just a quick reminder that if she plans to breast feed, she may find foods with more spice or even a lot of garlic, a problem. I say this as I realize most of the things I would make to freeze would fit into this category!

Soups and stews are great because they freeze well in small portions and make an easy meal with a salad or sandwich.

Foods like chicken or eggplant parm freeze well.

This is such a nice and helpful idea!

In addition to meals to freeze (which often tend to be “heavier” meals/casseroles) a few month subscription to Misfits Market Misfits Market or Imperfect Foods https://www.imperfectfoods.com/ would help to get a regular delivery of fresh produce (and sometimes other foods like snacks/canned goods)
