Cool down?

Hi! I will be doing a summer stay in a dorm this summer and the dorms do not have air conditioning. I am very heat sensitive and the weather will be hot so I was wondering if anyone had good solutions to beat the heat. I was looking at this:

http://www.lnt.com/product/index.jsp?productId=1361040&cp=1331608.1331961&parentPage=family

any other suggestions?

Yup..I live in a very hot area in the summer (not quite like the Gulf, but still) so I have some experience, as most of my family doesn't have a/c!

Keep bottles of water in the freezer. You can use them on your person until they melt some, then drink them!

Bring paper fans - they work much better than electric fans or even those personal-sized battery-powered fans.

Cold washcloth on your neck

Keep your hair wet

Wear loose, button-up shirts and athletic shorts (but fashionably!)

Sandals with few straps as possible

2) paper fans? like the ones that you have to manually move? uggg...lol :) I'm too lazy for that

umm... wear camis (if ure a girl) and loads of shorts (if ure a guy). and loads of water.

If the dorms don't have AC, hang out in the library or a local restaurant.

^yes, I plan on spending as little time in my dorm room as possible. But i do get pretty hot at night so I still need some advice

Well, I'm one of those people who can't sleep without blankets, so if you're like me, maybe you should invest in some Climacool-esque sheets, if they make those. Also, when I was staying in Florida during the summer and the AC broke, I slept in my bikini top instead of a t-shirt. Interesting, but everybody else did it, too, sooo...

^yea, i always need blankets too. OK, Im definately takign swimsuits and lots of camis.

... you could look into a room AC unit. I can't sleep when it's hot either.

or go to your doctor and get a medical note and maybe they'll give you a window unit.

get a boxy looking fan that you can put in the window and circulate air through your room.

I have that fan you have in your original post and I would say that it isn't any better than any other fan... my dorm doesn't have AC and there are days when its in the 90s... and I HATE the heat! I have two of those box fans (like big industrial looking things) and I put both sided by side in the window. One blows air out of the room and the other brings in new air. It works well and be sure to keep the blinds closed because the sun is hot too.

It you get hot at night, I find that a bedside fan works great for keeping me cool when I'm sleeping...

my mom always said that its unhealthy to have a fan blowing air directly on you. dont know if its true lol, but has anyone else ever heard that?

My mama said that alligators are angry because they got all them teeth and no tooth brush.

the difference is that my mom is smart and yours sounds kind of stupid. lol just kidding

Just sleep naked

my mom says that **** too about air conditioners, but i do it all the time (with fans and ACs) and i'm fine.

i've never heard that fan thing..haha, your mom would hate me. i sleep with a standing fan blowing right on me all year round...and it gets COLD here in the winter (below zero cold, not that pansy 30 degree cold lol). i'm afraid my roommate will hate me for it next year!

ooo I forgot! most dorms won't allow you to add your own A/c unit because they suck up so much energy. also, that fan you're looking at isn't that great - you need something BIG widthwise with large blades. look into a fan that's meant to go in your window, as well as the standing fans or box fans. If you and your roommate each have a big oscilating (sp?) fan, plus a fan in the window, you will notice a big difference in room temp! Also, if the air in the hall is cooler, try putting a fan right in your doorway for a couple of hours before bed. the point about keeping the blinds closed is good too. Finally, if your room isn't too hot in the morning, but the temperatures are expected to rise a lot during the day keep your windows and doors CLOSED! We don't have AC in our house (not really necessary here), so we keep stuff closed up on days when it gets super hot, and it makes the hugest difference.

Well, this past summer I had to stay in some dorms without air conditioning for 5 weeks...and on the top floor at that! At first, it was pretty hot, but you get used to it. I recommend the fan in the window (like other people have said). The only thing about that is you need to remember to close the window or move the fan on days that it might rain, considering electrical devices and water don't mix well. Another thing that might help is to have a smaller fan by your bed (my roommate and I had a rotating one that we put between us)...that will definitely help at night. Finally, try to keep as few lights on at a time as possible, and always remember to turn them (and your computer!) off when you leave the room.
