I've noticed that most schools have moved away from a core curriculum to distribution requirements. I really like Columbia and its core. I'm also applying to UChicago for the Common Core. Are there any other core curricula similar to these (specifically Columbia's) at top universities and liberal arts colleges?

All of the Jesuit schools have a strong core so you might want to consider Gerogetown and Boston College.

Georgetown does not have a Core curriculum. It has “general education” requirements (a.k.a. distribution requirements). For example, it requires 2 “humanities and writing” courses. 1 of them can be fulfilled by virtually any course in the humanities (e.g. “FREN-040: Knights of Old & Harry Potter”).

Chicago’s Core courses are interdisciplinary courses designed specifically for the Core curriculum. Enrollments are capped at 20 students; they generally are discussion-oriented. They are co-developed by faculty of The College (not necessarily by the instructor). They cover broad themes of general interest to the humanities, social sciences, physical or biological sciences (e.g. “Self, Culture, and Society”, “Matter, Energy, and Organization”.) Readings are almost always from primary source materials (not textbooks).

Georgetown’s program is a Chinese Menu (one from column A, one from column B.) Chicago’s is a prix fixe, 5-course meal designed by the chef from in-season ingredients.

All the military academies have a very strong core.

Just looked at the U Chicago core. [The Curriculum - University of Chicago Catalog](The Curriculum < University of Chicago Catalog)
Maybe I’m wrong, but it doesn’t seem to be what I’ve associated with the “Core” anymore.

A number of other schools offer various versions of a core curriculum.

MIT, Harvey Mudd, and Caltech have considerable core requirements (specified math and science courses plus a lot of humanities and social studies requirements where students have elective choice within those categories).

[The Curriculum - University of Chicago Catalog](The Curriculum < University of Chicago Catalog) seems to indicate a fairly large menu of options for each part of the core curriculum at Chicago.

UCSD’s Revelle College has what may be considered a core curriculum requirement:

UCSD’s Eleanor Roosevelt College has a specified five quarter course sequence “Making of the Modern World” among its breadth requirements:

How so?

The Humanities courses listed in section “A” and the Social Sciences courses are very similar to what has been offered at least as far back as the 1970s. Courses such as “Greek Thought and Literature”, “Human Being and Citizen”, and “Self, Culture, and Society” have been offered for decades.

However, a former requirement for 3 quarters of History of Western Civilization has been replaced by a 2-3 quarter “Civilization Studies” requirement.

One of these days I’ll figure out how to line columns up…

Perhaps just reference page 84 of http://www.usafa.edu/df/dfr/curriculum/CHB.pdf for the USAFA core courses.
