core curriculum?

<p>Hey, I'm a rising senior, thinking about applying to Columbia ED. I already visited, and fell in love with the campus, and the core curriculum has also been a thing that stood out to me. I thought it was really interesting, I just want to know what some people who actually have taken it to tell me their opinions. Did you guys think it was good, or a waste of time, where other classes could have been taken?</p>

<p>The most strict part of the core is CC/lithum and your enjoyment of it depends on two things: a) if you enjoy reading/writing/classics b) your teacher. I’m a math major, so reading and writing really aren’t my thing. I really liked the books in LitHum - fun, classic stories like Aeneid/Odyssey, some Greek plays, Crime and Punishment… For my first semester of CC, I had the ****tiest teacher who was a newbie teacher and I thought that I hated CC so much. It’s much more philosophy/politics which obviously aren’t related to my interests. But then my second semester I switched teachers and I absolutely LOVED the course. The teacher really helped us to understand the main points that the authors were trying to make and how it related to the world as a whole. We also did some cooler philosophers second semester like Freud and Darwin (Science <3). So yeah - get a good teacher. For someone like me who’s a math major, I was really glad that I was able to “expand my horizons” and learn more about cool subjects that I would have never thought about taking. The fact that everyone you know is also enrolled in the same class makes it easy and fun. Not a waste of time at all.</p>

<p>Otherwise -
Language - easy, just take something you like. You probably will have completed most of it in HS. I took French, and I’m glad that now I can sort of speak a second language.
Science - easy, you can literally take anything from Psych to Math to count for this requirement. Check it: [Science</a> Requirement | Columbia College](<a href=“Columbia College Bulletin < Columbia College | Columbia University”>Columbia College Bulletin < Columbia College | Columbia University)
Music and Art Hum - I haven’t taken them yet, sorry, but I hear that again, get good teachers and they are generally easy and fun. You get to go to museums and see operas and stuff.
Global Core - again, there are so many classes available for this that you really can’t go wrong. Take Sex in the Tropics oh yeah. Oh yeah UWriting and FroSci. UWriting is very time consuming. You’ll get through it with your peers. It’s hard to do well in this class, but I definitely think that my writing improved and it was helpful for writing lithum/cc papers. Frosci is the biggest joke. Please see the Emlyn Hughes incident for an example. <a href=“HuffPost - Breaking News, U.S. and World News | HuffPost”>HuffPost - Breaking News, U.S. and World News | HuffPost;
