" if you have a sub 3.0 gpa at these schools, you are screwed regardless of which school you attend."

while that is true, I believe it would be difficult for anyone to get that low of gpa at any of these schools, unless he is majoring in engineering or the like. Average gpa at Brown is like 3.6. Average gpa at Cornell is around 3.3-3.4. Duke is similar, but I am not sure about UMich.

2. Cornell folks will tell you that Cornell is tops in every field, Cornell's selectivity is low because of its size, but will not give Michigan a break in selectivity even tho it's twice the size of Cornell. And they will tell you that Cornell CAS is HYPSM material, and just as good as Duke, if not better.

Very not true. Please avoid such inflammatory hyperbole, even though you do not personally respect Cornell very much.

Nobody ever said Cornell is tops in every field or that is is just as selective as HYP etc... It has about 15 programs ranked in the top 1-15ish. Its acceptance rates are hard to compare because they vary so greatly by school and programs within schools.

The only reason you have this impression of people who know Cornell is because there are many people who say Cornell is the "worst" and automatically claim school XXX is superior to it in all ways. Demonstrating that it is not the worst, and for certain programs or people might be better than another school's specific program, is far from claiming it is the best. No one has ever done that.

Much to the outrage of Dukies, you are correct that few would consider Duke and Cornell anything but peers. I have not seen anyone claim Cornell is inherently superior to Duke, though.

I can't imagine the avg GPA at Brown is nearly as high as 3.6. Also, wouldn't 30%+ of the class at Cornell and Duke have a GPA under 3.0? I highly doubt that many grads are going to end up working at McDonalds.

You don't always need a high GPA to get good job opportunities, especially if Daddy's got connections. I've heard about this one kid who has something like a 2.0 gpa and spends most of his time partying and spending money, because as long as he does well enough to graduate, he's taking over the family business back in India.
