I have a Skype alum interview tomorrow morning. It was supposed to be Wed but she wanted to do it tomorrow and now I’m panicking a bit. For those who did it already what was it like and what questions did they ask you?
@Chrysanthemum14 I had mine at a public library and it felt like a casual talk. I got asked basic questions like information about myself, why I chose Cornell and CAS, why I picked my major, what do I want to concentrate within the major, etc…
I’ve seen posts on here with people that had their alumni do all the talking, but it was the opposite for me. My alumni made herself very open to answering my questions and wrote down questions she didn’t know the answer to. I came to the meeting with a small notebook and 10 questions. She also gave me a Class of 2019 summary paper and went over some key topics she liked (tuition, financial aid, class demographics). My alumni is actually involved in my school district’s board, so we had a lot to talk about the changes they implemented this year too lol.
Well, I didn’t enroll for ED yesterday due to financial aid complications…kinda regretting it now, but it probably wouldn’t have worked out anyway…now I feel like all that hard work went to waste, considering where I’m going now accepts kids with exceptionally lower stats…my venting aside, you guys have an extra spot that just opened up!!! Use my vacancy wisely!! Good luck to all!!!
@ArthurDent42 Sincerely sorry to hear that this didn’t work out for you and your family. I’m sure you tried and explored all your avenues with the FA office, right?
How did people get interviews? I got an invite to a group information session but I can’t find anything about a one-on-one interview…

@TiggyB62 Yeah…thanks so much for your help during all of this!! I should have gone the RD route now that I look back on it.
RD applicants, make sure you don’t make any mistakes on your finaid stuff. I did and I fixed the mistake as soon as they sent me the preliminary finaid package (Dec 11th, day after being accepted), but due to the admissions office being on break for two weeks, I did not receive the fixed/correct/actual preliminary finaid package until Jan 7th, with the deadline to enroll being Jan 22nd, so I didn’t have as much time to make considerations as I thought.
Moreover, the college I’m attending now accepted me during time I was waiting for Cornell to come back with the finaid and told me that their scholarship opportunity weekend (visit the school for a weekend and do interviews and stuff for scholarships) was/is Feb 5-7, after the Cornell enrollment deadline.
I did ask for an extension to the Cornell enrollment deadline over the phone, stating that we still weren’t sure about the fin aid and that the other school I applied early action to was offering me a scholarship weekend thing after Jan 22nd. They said they do not allow extensions for said reasons, which makes sense.
RD kids, also make sure to VISIT THE SCHOOL NOW IF YOU HAVEN’T ALREADY!!! Find some way to visit. Especially if Cornell is your top choice, make sure to visit. This was probably my biggest mistake. When making the final decision with my parents, both my parents and I considered the fact that I hadn’t actually visited the school as a huge con; none of us actually knew what it would be like for me. Impression from the Internet (most likely)=/= what it’s really like.
Funny thing is, both finaid calculators for Cornell and the college I’m now going to came up with the same EFC number for the first year, only varying by a couple hundred dollars. Why did I turn down Cornell, you might ask? When we used their finaid calculator for predicting my sophomore year finaid, our EFC went up by $5-7k, because our income is expected to go up (although our income will go up, it won’t go up enough to cover the extra $5-7k, which would push us over the limit). The school I’m now set to go to didn’t change it’s EFC at all for year 2 (in fact it goes down by $1kish). Now that I think about it, I probably could have taken out student loans for years 2-4 at Cornell, but my parents were totally opposed to that idea.
@TiggyB62 I do have a couple more questions for you:
1.) Could I transfer to Cornell for sophomore year, or is this pretty much out of the picture due to my ED withdrawal?
2.) Is it in any way possible to go back on my word? Even though I did send them an email telling them I can’t attend due to finaid complications and they responded stating that they have withdrawn my acceptance and will remove my application, I can still access all of the portals for finaid, enrollment, application checklist, etc. They will probably remove me completely from the system on Monday, considering how they didn’t respond to my email until 2pm Friday, 2 hours before they leave at 4pm. The last line of their response email is, “[My name], please do not hesitate to contact me if I can be of further assistance to you.” My mom did say going there for one year and transferring out would have been an option (or staying and getting student loans for years 2-4), and I know it would be easier to transfer out of Cornell and into the school I’m currently set to go to than the other way around. I know that would look super cheap…heck, I think I should just stick with the current situation…this already has been a super burdening and crazy and going-back-and-forth situation…
Never mind question 2, that’s really stupid now that I think about it. Too desperate, risky, and could ruin transfer chances (if I ever try to transfer). I would really love an answer for question 1 though.
@ArthurDent42 omg I’m so sorry about this whole experience you’ve had. I really hope wherever you do decide to go will leave you happy and who knows, we might see each other on campus one day good luck!!!
@CCSenioritis Thanks. I will try to transfer in after 1 year (or maybe even 2) at my safety school (doing that would make things cheaper). Hopefully I can do that even after withdrawing ED, although I think it’s fine; they only blacklist you if you back out ED for something besides finances. Plus, I doubt they’ll remember who I am a year or two down the road. Be sure to use my open spot wisely!!!
Yes, I’m sure you can try to transfer @ArthurDent42
Should I do the “interview” thing? I got an email offering the casual interview (it said it’s just for me to get to know the college, so not an actual interview)
On CC it is always advised that you take any opportunity you have to show interest and showcase your accomplishments, so yes, if it’s feasible, you should do it.
I got an email about an interview yesterday. They said they’d call on Thursday at 8pm. Does that mean I shouldn’t respond to the email?
You should respond that that time will be fine and thank them!
@HRSMom thank you. I took your advice. It seems obvious but I’m very awkward when responding to emails or calls.
I know. I was 18 once too…
@HRSMom I quit my job of almost a year last week by saying “I don’t wanna do this anymore” to my manager mid-shift
@XCjunior2016 From a still awkward adult, it says a lot that you ask for and take advice. As long as you know that you need to double check things when you think the shyness/awkwardness is getting in the way, you will be fine. Good luck!
I received an email that I need to submitted the following form(s?).
“Arrival/Departure Record (I-94) with all endorsements and temporary I-155 stamp that has not expired and I797 (Notice of Action) showing that you have applied for permanent residency”
Does anyone know where I can get this form and what this is? And what am I supposed to do?
And also what is IDOC?
-Thank You
