Cornell, Columbia, Yale, Harvard, Berkley, NYU, other Ivies

Hi everyone,

I got a 2200 for my SATI (760 reading, 720 math and 720 writing). I made 2 mistakes for writing, but screwed up badly on my essay (8/12).
For SATII, I got 760 for Literature and 770 for Math II.

My percentage average is 92-94ish. As I am taking the International Baccalaureate, the percentages are also very different for IB courses as opposed to normal GPA. Normally IB students' percentages are not taken into effect for schools; instead, our IB grades are, which are out of 45 points, 3 of which are bonus.

I'm taking IB, and I got a predicted for my grade 11 year of a 41-44.

I would like to go into political sciences, or anything that would allow a transfer to law in grad school.

My prospective schools are the following:
Columbia
NYU
Harvard
Yale
UC Berkeley

My extracurriculars are pretty diverse, e.g. I play badminton (ranked 34th provincially. I'm from BC, canada), play piano (level 10), but there are two projects that I am very proud of:

I was president of an organization called YouthVOC, which holds an annual event each year at a mall in our area, hosting many different organizations that provide opportunities for youth to volunteer abroad or locally. It's relatively new, and I was holding the position for only the second time, and the first time as official elected leader.

I started a Model United Nations on the national scale, hosting 300-400 people from all over Canada and from the States for 3 days at a hotel to debate current world issues.

Other ECs:
- Volunteer at local soup kitchen, 300hours+
- Volunteer at Free Geek Vancouver, 200 hours+
- Member of Amnesty International club
- Member of school Multicultural club
- School badminton team captain
- Duke of Edinburgh Bronze medal
- Vice president of school MUN
- Won awards at every MUN I've been to (quite a few)

I guess my questions are, should I retake my SATs? Are my extracurriculars good enough to make up the OK score? What are my chances? Are there any other schools I should perhaps consider going to? Thanks a lot!!

Columbia - low reach
NYU - in
Harvard - reach
Yale - reach
UC Berkeley - low reach

You should apply to all those schools.

Add a safety or two just in case

Though you’ll get into NYU, add some more safeties and matches – while you have a decent chance, all of these other schools are reaches for pretty much everyone.

Hey guys,

Thanks for the replies! Is there anything I could do to give myself a better chance? I mean, I have more ECs-like being on the inaugral District Student Council of our school district, and on the board of a scholarship committee that gives funds to youth-headed initiatives. Should I just aim for a higher SAT score?

Also, is EDing for Columbia a good idea for me?

thanks guys :D
