Cornell ED engineering chances from prestigious prep school

Applying to cornell ED engineering from one of the most prestigious prep school in the nation (Hotchkiss School).. school mean SAT: 1400 endownment of 365million....... our school sends about 25% of the graduating class to ivies and stanford and many to top LAS like Williams and Middlebury....

I started going to hotchkiss my sophomore year transfering from a local school in hong kong..my sophomore grade sucks as i was adjusting to the totally new system (my college advisor's gonna explain that in her rec) and i hv strong upswing trend since then......have one of the most vigorous math and science curriculum (ran out of math courses after junior year even school offers up to college 2nd year)...... almost qualified for Mathematics Olympiad last year (7 points from the cut)..... Decent SAT scores...APs and stuff...grades are okay....school doesnt rank....gpa system is kinda wierd so i will just include quintiles here.......
my sophomore year: 3rd quintile ....junior year: 2nd quintile (all unweighted)

ALSO, DAD went TO CORNELL GRAD SCHOOL FOR ENGINEERING AND MBA

as someone who went to another "prestigious prep school" - one of of the others in the ten schools organization - i can tell you you are asking this question to the wrong people. Talk to your college counselers - i know Hotchkiss has them. They will be able to compare your position to those of other recent hotchkiss graduates.

Also, the hotchkiss name (like other similar boarding schools) will help you at certain schools (mostly private schools) and not help you at other schools (mostly public schools).

USC, Wash U, CMU, tufts, and BU will look upon hotckiss favorably.
Michigan and Illinois won't give a ****, and you will be at a major disadvantage because your grades will seem lower than those of applicants from easier schools.

of course i talked to my college advisor..however i just wanna know wut more people think about my chances ...

forgot to mention I also did a summer abroad homestaying in spain the summer before senior year....

i also won various lesser math prizes....Mandelbrot, NEML those type of stuff..

and english is my second language

The legacy thing will help you at Cornell. Your stats are OK for Cornell. It all comes down to the luck of the draw. IMO, you will make the first cut -- and then it has to look like a fit to the admissions department.

Speaking just on the subject of Tufts - you have to be in the upper quintile, no matter if you do come from a well-known private school. My roommate freshman year was, in fact, from the Hotchkiss School and she was among the top 10 students by the time she graduated. Being from a "good" school but not being one of the best students doesn't really help.

yes and no, many of the top boarding schools send about 1/4 to 1/3 of their graduating classes to the Ivy League, MIT, or Stanford. That's a much higher percentage than most schools, which might only send a few kids every few years or so. Statistically, boarding schools are ahead, though, that being said, it's a lot harder to be in the top 10 or 25% at a good boarding school than it is to be even top 5% at most other schools. That's because the student body is composed mainly of students who already had excellent grades, nearly 100% of the student's at many boarding schools were top 10% at their old schools. That makes the competition a lot harder. Fortunately, most colleges realize this and as such are willing to accept more people from schools like Hotchkiss.

ya..from what my college advisor told me....66.6% (two thirds) of the people in the second quintile who applied got accepted to tufts last 2 years....... so hopefully.... and my college advisor puts tufts in my group 2 (match)

but i still wish to know more about my chance of
ED Cornell Engineering
Wash U ST Louis Engineering
U Michigan Engineering
Tufts Engineering
USC Engineering
Carnegie Mellon (Info System, Business)
BU Engineering
U of Illinois Urbana Champaign (engineering)....

thanks

bumpybumpy

You should look into Harvey Mudd College. If you want the most comprehensive engineering/technical education, check it out.

It's a lot of work and a very challenging program. Up to it?

still no answer on the generalchances and prediction about getting in ED Cornell engineering and the other schools i really wanna know
the other schools are (applying to engineering)
Wash U St Louis
U Michigan
Tufts
USC
Carnegie Mellon
BU
University of Illionois urbana champaign
