Cornell or Georgetown

I have been fortunate enough to get into these two schools, but now, I have no idea which to choose.
Cornell wasn’t even on my radar until I got a likely from them and I’ve always wanted to go to Georgetown. In both schools, I will be majoring in global health with a premed track. Money isn’t an issue because scholarships. I visited GU and I will be attending Cornell days very soon. I want to know anything tidbits/anecdotes yall have to say as it will ease my decision making (hopefully).

(I will post in the Georgetown group so you may see this thread twice and if you know of a thread that is very similar to this, I appreciate links!)

While, when presented with this choice (see Parchment Cornell university vs Georgetown) the majority choose Cornell, it will depend on your major and personal preferences. You should get an idea after your visit. Good luck

Can I have your problem please? #-o

@ds0501‌ These are the two school that I’m choosing from and I’m stuck between them.

No I mean, I want to have this issue come Tuesday haha!!

@ds0501‌ oh ahahahah!! don’t worry, you will be more than fine!!

Well, I just checked the mail and no longer have to chose between Georgetown and Cornell. Rejected from Georgetown.

I think the other poster meant that they envied your collegiate situation :-bd

These are both awesome schools. I’m guessing you’re deciding between HumEc and the College? I don’t really know that much about global health in particular, but honestly, I don’t know if I’d recommend Cornell or schools with similar academic environments like Berkeley for premed (saying this as a diehard Big Red).

It’s a large school and a competitive one, and from what I hear there aren’t that many opportunities for shadowing. Not saying that Georgetown will be any easier, but having a medical school nearby might simplify matters, and I think people are more likely to thrive somewhere they perceive as their dream school.

Just my own two cents. I would recommend posting this on SDN as well if you haven’t already. Best of luck!

I’m having a similar situation but instead it’s between Cornell and Berkeley. Honestly, I’ve come to the decision that Cornell is probably the best bet. It is more renowned and recognized, Ivy League and the alumni network is one that will get you very far in whatever profession you end up choosing. Also, if you want to look at just statistics - Cornell is #16 while Georgetown is #21 (in terms of recognition). It also comes down to which school is a better fit for you, I know that I’m having an issue with Cornell being so rural and I am going to go visit it on the 19th of April just to see if it’s something that will fit me.

So in all honesty, I’d choose Cornell. And I think by answering your question, I kind of answered my own! Thanks and Good luck @beyondstr3ss3d !

You can’t always go by the rankings, but as a Cornell student I am certainly biased in that regard. I love it here. I know the global health program here is great, and there are a plethora of study abroad opportunities and other ways to get involved in global health. I am in ILR and I went to the Future of Global Health Gala with my girlfriend (she’s in the global health class now) that was organized by two global health clubs on campus. We got to hear interesting viewpoints from Cornell Weill Medical College which was great. Cornell Days will be a great way for you to possibly sit in on a class or two and get a feel for the school. I have a friend who goes to Georgetown and he seems like he’s really enjoying it. He’s in McDonough, so I’m not sure about other programs. If you have any other questions let me know!

Something you may wish to consider is the Cornell in Washington program, which allows Cornell students to study and intern in Washington D.C. for a semester while still being taught by Cornell professors. Just in case what was drawing you to Georgetown was location more than anything else, Cornell still would give you the opportunity to live there for a bit! But both are wonderful schools and I really don’t think there is a “right” or “wrong” choice; at this point it’s really personal preference!

@Snowbells‌ Wish I had your problem. #WaitlistedFromUCB

What type of people do you think Cornell attracts? (generalizations welcome)

“What type of people do you think Cornell attracts? (generalizations welcome)”
Pretty smart people, mostly from the Northeast. Beyond that, the generalizations break down faster there than at many other universities. Due to the high diversity of programs of study at the individual colleges.

@beyondstr3ss3d‌ Cornell attracts people who like to work hard. Do some fall through the cracks of admission? Inevitably… but those people won’t last long. Cornell is a very diverse school with a lot of different types of people here. It won’t be difficult for you to find a group of friends that you feel comfortable with.

Georgetown is in an urban setting. Cornell is in a rural setting. Going out in D.C./Georgetown neighborhood is expensive. Going out in Ithaca, not so much. Georgetown will give you access to a nearby medical center. Cornell will not. Georgetown is a school with Catholic roots, which may be important to you and a positive. If it’s not important to you, find out what it entails.

That said, if you were my child and were intent on going to med school, I’d advise going to a less competitive undergrad. Premed competition at these schools is intense.
