Cornell Symphony/Chamber Orchestra

I'm interested in auditioning for one of these ensembles. I've played cello in Junior and HS orchestras for like 5 years now, but I haven't really done that much work in terms of solo repertoire. Does anyone know how tough the competition usually is for a cello spot, and have any recommendations for an audition piece?

If I practiced ~2 hours a day from now til auditions, would I have a shot?

I’d like to know as well. I reckon there may be a fair amount of competition among violinists? I’ve played in school and extracurricular ensembles since 5th grade, and took private lessons through my sophomore year but I’m average at best, I’d say. However, I would like to continue participating in orchestras and I’d be totally cool with being last stand/last chair second violin. :)

Yeah, I feel the same way. I just want to be in it for the experience, Orchestra was always my favorite activity during HS and I’m going to miss it.

And yeah, I think there’ll be quite a lot of violinists since there are 4 separate audition sections for them x_x

I play in a music group although not in the orchestra, they try to make an attempt to get everyone in a group (at least for strings, this is not the case for winds). last year they had over 60 violins audition and I think they had to turn some away.

uh. maybe im a jerk but im not worried about getting in, even though im not great. im sure they let you do what you want as long as its reasonable.

do we get credit for chamber ensembles? hows the chamber orchestra?
